How Does a Ductless Heating System Work?

Improving Your Overall Indoor Comfort

Here in St. Petersburg, FL, heating systems are usually thought of as gas furnaces, based around a central unit that distributes hot air through a series of ducts. It’s an effective and popular system, but it’s not the only system out there. In particular, ductless mini-split systems do a very good job of heating homes as well, and in some ways offer real advantages over centralized gas furnaces. But how does a ductless heating system work? Read on or the answers.

As their title implies, ductless systems don’t use ducts as all. Instead, they divide heating (and cooling) duties between multiple individual units spaced around your household, all of which are connected to a single outdoor unit. Each indoor unit contains its own controls and is sized to heat and/or cool the room or space in question. You can turn on individual units, then adjust them to match the needs of each room or leave them off for those sections of the house you aren’t using.

The advantages of such a system are obvious and can include the following:

  • Efficiency. Ductless systems don’t use as much energy as centralized heating systems, because they have no energy loss from moving the conditioned air through ductwork. Their zoned heating and cooling lets you cut down even further by allowing you to easily keep difference rooms at different temperatures. That translates to serious savings on your monthly energy bills.
  • More control. The ductless system means that you can tailor the temperature in individual rooms. So one family member can set the temperature for 73 degrees in the bedroom, while another family member can set it for 68 degrees in the living room.
  • No ducts. Ducts can be expensive to install, and some houses don’t have the space to accommodate ductwork. Ductless systems are great for older houses or home additions, since they allow you to keep your home comfortable with a fairly simple installation.
