As a country, we really enjoy the air conditioning. Two-thirds of all homes in the nation have it and they use about 5% of all electricity in the US. We depend upon air conditioning in Florida to keep us safe and comfortable during the scorching summer months, but many folks are unclear about the system works. How is cool air created? And where does it come from? And why does my air conditioner emit heat?

These systems function more or less like refrigerators do, by transferring heat from the interior of your home to the outside. Whether you have central air conditioning or ductless mini-split air conditioners, there are a few basic components to the system. The compressor is a pump which pressurizes and pumps refrigerant through a closed pipe system made of copper. The refrigerant is raised to a high temperature, as much as 150 degrees F, and is cooled by the condenser, a coil surrounded by aluminum fins and metal tubing. The refrigerant then leaves the condenser and travels to the expansion valve, located indoors, which rapidly cools the refrigerant by a dispersed spray into a larger diameter pipe. The evaporator operates similarly to the condenser but in reverse: hot interior air is sucked in and blown across coils of cold refrigerant, which then absorbs the heat, resulting in cool dehumidified air that is then blown throughout your ductwork. That is what keeps you cool during the St. Petersburg, FL heat.
